This next stone marks the resting place of Johann's younger brother, Charles Henry Meyer, the brother who left for the States prior to Johann's voyage. Charles died September 8, 1892, at 1400 Gates Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.

I have no records, other than the information shown in this photograph, of Catherine Meyer. I assume she was Charles' wife, but her maiden name is lost to the family, for now.

In some Meyer family documents there is an IOU from Charles to his brother, Johann, for an undisclosed sum, dated April 5, 1870. But, that's not unusual as Johann was virtually a banker to his entire family, with many other IOUs to him among the family papers.

For instance, Charles Scouten, Sr. borrowed money from Johann between 1867 and 1870 to buy canal boats for Scouten's canal shipping business. The boats were named: "John Meyer," "H.B. Littlefield," and "Harbinger." (I would assume that H.B. Littlefield was another investor.) Whether or not the canal boat business involved moving sugar cane, no one knows...
