Gesche (Grace) Theresia Meyer ca 1860
Born: 1830, Newtown, England
Died: 1887, West Hoboken, NJ

This is Johann's only sister—Johann was born in Germany, but his two brothers and sister were born in Newtown, after their father and mother, Heinrich Hewey Meyer and Theresia Kneud, immigrated.

Heinrich died in 1838, and it is believed that his wife, Theresia, his youngest son, Charles Henry, and Gesche all immigrated to the States sometime before Johann did in 1859—Carston is presumed to have lived out his days in England. (There is a letter to Johann from John George in 1860 stating how he looked forward to seeing his uncle, aunts and cousins.)

Theresia died September 5, 1866 at 29 Hudson Ave., Brooklyn, NY, and is the first person buried in the family plot at the All Faiths Lutheran Cemetery in Middle Village, NY (pictures are in this gallery). The plot was purchased January 5, 1862, by Charles H. Meyer, living at 1400 Gates Ave, Brooklyn, and John Meyer, living at 1912 Main St, Richmond, VA. (There are currently seventeen family members interred there.)

As for Gesche, like most immigrants, her name was Americanized when she arrived in the States—Grace is written on the back of this photo. And, during her life in the New World, she married twice and had three children.
