Elizabeth "Betsy" Harrison Emery

Betsy and Johann were married May 29, 1842 at the Parish Church in the parish of St. Leonard's Shoreditch in the county of Middlesex, England. Their marriage certificate gives Johann's occupation as "Sugar Refiner," but I'm afraid poor Betsy's occupatioin was stated to be a "Servant."

They settled in Bristol and had eight children before emigrating—two of them twins:

• Elizabeth (Libby) Rosetta and
• John George, both born July 5, 1843,

and two who died in infancy:

• Henry Carsten, b. January 24, 1845; d. February 1845
• Frederick Henry, b. February 12, 1849; d. March 1851.

Their other children were:

• Theresa Caroline, born 6/27/1846
• Catherine Anne, born March 7, 1848
• Anna Marie, born September 29, 1851
• Charles Frederick, born April 8, 1853

March 6, 1860, John George writes to Johann that the family will leave England on April 10, aboard the "JKL." (Those are the famous, pseudonymous initials of the patriot bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, the Augustinian James Warren Doyle, whose vast range of knowledge impressed even the Duke of Wellington—talk about a small world).

The "JKL," a "barque" or sailing ship, arrived in New York May 29, 1860. Mother Elizabeth (1815-1880) was listed as 40-years old on the manifest—the woman lied about her age even then. But, what's five years among family...
