Manhattan Valley

Not a very attractive map, I must say, but it delineates those streets that make up what is known as Manhattan Valley due to a slight dip in the topography. It lies between 96th Street and 106th, and no doubt, you'll notice that other prominent thorough-fares from my history are shown: Columbus Avenue, Amsterdam Avenue, etc. So, since almost all of my relatives lived in this area, it seems safe to say that around the turn of the century Manhattan Valley was an Irish community.

Let's see, I was born on West 106th. My father lived on Columbus when he met my mum, who was living on 106th Street at the time. They were married in a church on West 107th. My mother and I, upon returning from Termonfeckin, lived on Amsterdam Ave. My Uncle Patrick on my mother's side lived on Columbus. My Uncle Joseph on my father's side lived on Columbus. Heck, even my step-father's cousin lived on Columbus. And that's just the tip of the ice berg; sometimes it seems like everyone related to my life's story lived there.
